Origin of the day of lovers
Although it was popularized in the twentieth century, the origin of this celebration dates back to the third century, in a Rome ruled by the Emperor Claudius II, who had decided to prohibit the celebration of marriages for young people. He considered that singles without family were better soldiers. However, Valentin, a priest, saw this decree unfair and began to celebrate marriages in secret. When the emperor found out, he ordered to imprison him. To test him, an officer challenged the priest to help his daughter, named Julia and blind from birth. Valentin accepted and returned his sight. But that did not prevent him from being executed on February 14. For her part, Julia, in gratitude to the priest, planted an almond tree of pink flowers next to her grave. For this reason the almond tree is considered a symbol of love. Precisely in Mallorca, from the end of January and throughout the month of February you can enjoy what has been called "Mallorcan snow", this is the flowering of the thousands of almond trees on the island, covering the fields with a white blanket.
